Summer Scares

As summer heats up, you might be looking for a good scary read. Horror is a great genre for people who want to experience all the physical sensations of fear, anxiety and dread, but from a place of comfort and safety.

Short Scares

New to horror? Short stories are the perfect way to get to know a genre. They let you try a bunch of different authors and writing styles. If you’re not sure what scares you, a good anthology can set you on your way. Horror lends itself well to the short story format, hearkening back to the early days of horror comics like Tales from the Crypt and TV shows like Night Gallery.

Slasher Scares

We’re going to the cottage! (no, not that one – think summer camp at Crystal Lake). Slasher horror movies are finding new life on the page as well as the screen. The literary versions tap into nostalgia for 80s horror, final girls, campy humour, and inventive kills by a (usually) masked killer.

Teen horror is a great place to find scary coming of age stories, featuring identity exploration and friends banding together to battle the unknown.

Parental Scares

Motherhood comes with an abundance of joy but also a lot of worry, and no genre is more equipped to put those deep anxieties under the microscope than (as it’s affectionately called) “Mommy horror.”
