Text reads, BookBuzz

Written by Berny

Welcome to Book Buzz, a monthly newsletter featuring book news and recommendations from Regina's public librarians.

This month, we're looking at the cozier side of life! Cozy reads are go-to reads for people looking for quick, easy stories with lighter tones and comforting themes. They're increasing in popularity and can now be found across most genres.

Cozy Fantasy

The cozy fantasy subgenre has really taken off in popularity. It offers a high fantasy, low stakes, magical escape from the real world with lovable characters and some humour mixed in—perfect if you're looking for an entertaining, feel-good read or an introduction to the fantasy genre as a whole.

Fantasy isn't the only genre experiencing a boom in cozy publishing. Cozy mystery has been around for a while, and now other genres are jumping on the bandwagon.

Cozy mysteries have many well-established series to get you started (Murder She Wrote, Agatha Raisin, The Thursday Murder Club—just to name a few.) They're often set in a small town, feature an amateur detective, and involve crimes without the suspense and violence found in a typical thriller.

Cozy romances often have a comforting setting (think small towns, coffee shops, bakeries, or bookstores) with low-stakes problems to overcome and a sweet love story featuring endearing characters. Although these romances are cozy, they can still be spicy!

Perhaps the most surprising is cozy horror. This may seem like a contradictory term, but they do exist. Cozy horror stories often have a spooky atmosphere but are less tense or violent than what you'd usually expect from the horror genre and have a guaranteed happy ending.

Cozy isn't just a literary style, it can be a way of life!  Explore these nonfiction titles that embrace slowing down and feeling calm.

Cheering for the Villain

Let's be honest... even cozy can have a dark side and there's something intriguing about being on the side of the villain. On the surface, it seems like the bad guys have it easy with more freedom to do what they want and more fun than the heroes who have to adhere to a moral code and save the day. But is the life of a bad guy all it's cracked up to be? Check out these darkly humorous cozy fantasies where characters dare to venture over to the shady side.
